The Ombrone Valley is the valley formed by the Ombrone river, which extends into the province of Grosseto, after the river has crossed the southern part of the Chianti hills and the Crete Senesi area along its initial stretch. It also includes the gentle hills that rise around the course of the river and delimit its orographic watershed, including the hilly area of “I Triboli” where the famous cypresses of San Quirico d’Orcia stand.
In the province of Siena, the valley covers the municipal areas of Castelnuovo Berardenga, Rapolano Terme, Asciano, Buonconvento, Murlo and Montalcino, while the valley extends partially up to the northern end of the municipal area of San Quirico d’Orcia. In the province of Grosseto, the Ombrone river initially marks the border with the territory of Montalcino (SI), and then crosses the municipalities of Civitella Paganico, Cinigiano, Campagnatico, Scansano and Grosseto, before flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea at Bocca d’Ombrone (Grosseto ). The Grosseto area includes the entire territories of the three municipalities of the province, the locality of Montenero d’Orcia in the municipality of Castel del Piano and the localities of Istia d’Ombrone, Grancia, Batignano and Montepescali in the municipality of Grosseto.
The landscapes alternate river vegetation along the watercourses, Mediterranean maquis woods (south-facing slopes) and vast sunny areas where cypresses and cork trees strong> (in the Grosseto area) they shade the streets and mark the boundaries between the various estates; in the eastern part of the municipal area of Cinigiano, the first secular chestnut groves extend towards Monte Amiata. In the last stretch before the mouth, the Ombrone river crosses the Grosseto plain, a vast flat area in the heart of the Maremma.
Thermal Springs
Straddling the provinces of Grosseto and Siena, along the course of the Farma stream which marks the limit between the two provincial territories, are the Terme di Petriolo, which can be used both freely along the stream and in equipped facilities .
