Argentario: beaches, sea and nature

Monte Argentario

Monte Argentario is located in the south of Tuscany, not far from the border with Lazio. Its territory is truly unique: it contains in itself sea, beach, swamp and Mediterranean nature. It is in fact a promontory connected to the mainland only by two narrow tongues of sand: the Tombolo della Giannella and the Tombolo della Feniglia. Between the two strips is the Orbetello Lagoon, an oasis protected by the WWF.

The Argentario was exploited by Etruscans and Romans as a strategic port on the Mediterranean. With time the coastal villages of Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole developed as fishermen villages, while maintaining a strategic function for all the military powers that controlled them over the centuries.

Today the Argentario is a very popular and popular tourist destination. The pristine nature, the crystal clear sea, the sunny beaches are the characteristics most loved by tourists. The local gastronomy and the historical testimonies that are still found in the area are also highly appreciated.

Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole

The largest inhabited centers of the promontory are Porto Santo Stefano and Porto Ercole. They are located respectively on the western and eastern sides of the mountain. Both villages have preserved intact a historical center of great artistic, cultural and traditional interest. In the heart of the two villages there is a labyrinth of narrow lanes overlooking flowered balconies, stone arches, small squares and ancient churches.

These fishing villages have been exploited as strategic ports on the Mediterranean by every military power that was inserted in Tuscany to start from the Etruscans and the Romans. Many of the hills and panoramic hills of the Argentario are still today occupied by castles, towers and fortresses from the Middle Ages or later. They were used to monitor the coast and protect the population from pirate attacks. A large part of these castles is now open to the public and can be visited as a museum.

The two ports are today the fulcrum of the marine activities at the Argentario. From here ferries leave for the Isola del Giglio and Giannutri and mini-cruises on the Mediterranean. They can accommodate many boats, especially sailing boats that come here from all over the world to take advantage of ideal sailing conditions.
