Bolsena Lake

Bolsena Lake

Lake BolsenaLake Bolsena

Located in Maremma Laziale, it is the largest volcanic lake in Europe, with a surface area of 114 sq km .

Born thousands of years ago, mainly fed by rainwater, it also has numerous tributaries and a single one, the Marta river.

Up until the 1950s it was also known as ‘the drinking lake’ since its waters were defined as drinkable; and it is still today the cleanest lake in Europe, as well as being completely suitable for swimming, attracting many tourists also for this reason.

Very fishy lake with many varieties of species, such as tench, pike, carp, whitefish, perch, lactarine, crab and crayfish.

Thanks to its cleaning it has kept many species of algae and underwater plants almost completely disappeared in other basins.

Surrounded by wonderful landscapes and places to visit such as the cities of Bolsena, Capodimonte, Montefiascone…

There are also many activities that are organized in the area, for the many tourists who go every year, especially in the summer, to see this lake as big as it is beautiful.

Inside the lake we find two islands, Martana Island and Bisentina Island, around which boat tours are organized with stops close to the islands, but cannot be accessed because they are private.

Recently the lake was proposed as a candidate for inclusion in the Unesco World Heritage Site. span>

The lake also offers opportunities for canoeing, a sailboat ride or stopping with the camper in the campsites, many in the area of the very large pine forest.
