Fattoria di Marsiliana

Fattoria di Marsiliana

The Fattoria di Marsiliana is located south-west of Manciano (GR), along the road that leads to Albinia, in the hamlet of Marsiliana d’Albegna, on one of the last hilly spurs that lead into the Albegna plain.

The complex was built as a castle in medieval times near an ancient parish church. The locality was a domain of the Aldobrandeschi family in the thirteenth century, passed under the control of the Sienese in the fourteenth century and was conquered in the mid-sixteenth century by the Medici who incorporated it into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, after a very short period under the State of the Presidii. In the eighteenth century the structure became the property of the Corsini princes of Florence who profoundly restored it at the end of the nineteenth century; the farm is still owned by the Florentine family today.

The Fattoria di Marsiliana looks like an extensive complex that develops around the medieval tower, with stone walls and crenellations on the top.

The manor house extends over several levels, with quadrangular windows and plastered walls that recall the series of post-eighteenth-century renovations; very characteristic is the small church which once served as a noble chapel.

At the opposite end of the complex, there are a series of buildings with stone wall structures which made up the small village around the original castle, later becoming buildings for agricultural use for the farm. Currently they are used as residential residences.

Following the reclamation of the Maremma body after the Second World War, with which the useless large marshy areas were turned into arable land, Marsiliana developed around the old S.S. 74, where the village now stands.
