Talamone is an historic village full of charm, history and traditions. The village is located on the top of a rocky promontory on the edge of the Maremma Natural Park. This proximity has made it a point of reference for all tourists who want to visit the park by walking or cycling along its paths.
That of Talamone is a strategic position, certainly not chosen by chance by those who first settled on the promontory: the Etruscans. From the village you can enjoy a splendid view of Monte Argentario, the Orbetello Lagoon and a wide stretch of sea.
This fantastic landscape was constantly guarded by the Rocca, the medieval fortress that is today the symbol of the town. La Rocca dominates the fishermen’s houses and the small harbor from above. Reaching it on foot is an easy and original hike that develops along steep streets.
History of Talamone
Legend has it that under the Rocca, in the heart of the village, Telamone, uncle of the brave Achilles, is buried. The village would therefore have been named after this famous character.
The small local port has always been fundamental to Talamone’s economy since the dawn of the country, in the Etruscan period. In fact, before becoming a popular tourist destination, the village was a strategic docking point for Roman ships in the heart of the Mediterranean. Instead, at the fall of the Roman Empire it was transformed into a simple fishing village. The typical atmosphere of the medieval village dedicated to fishing and agriculture can still be felt perfectly along the streets and in the shops of the historic center.
The bay of Talamone was also a protagonist during the Risorgimento: here that in 1860 Garibaldi landed to recover the necessary weapons for his Expedition of the Thousand. The character is remembered with a beautiful monument in the main square.

Visitors to Talamone love its sandy beaches and cliffs, the crystal clear sea and the endless possibilities for fun, relaxation, outdoor sports open air. The village and its bay present the ideal conditions for sailing on a sailing boat and for practicing various water sports such as surfing, kite surfing and windsurfing.
In addition to excursions in the Maremma Natural Park, you can explore the luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation that surrounds the village. In particular, along the coast there is a fresh and aromatic pine forest, ideal for playing sports even on the hottest days.
You can visit the temple of Talamonaccio, an Etruscan temple dating back to the end of the 4th century BC. located on the Talamonaccio hill, today some ruins remain. There is also the aquarium of the Orbetello Lagoon which documents the flora and fauna of the lagoon area of the municipality of Orbetello. One of the gates to the Maremma Natural Park is also located in the structure and, in addition, there is one of the Tartanet centres, a veterinary clinic for recovery and care of sea turtles.
Talamone also organizes tastings of wine and local products. The quality of Maremma’s agricultural products is well known throughout Italy: a holiday in the village is an unmissable opportunity to appreciate the local wine, oil, cured meats, meat and honey.
