Vast vineyards and medieval villages in the shadow of Mount Amiata
The Wine Route Montecucco and Amiata is an enogastronomic route that involves 10 municipalities of the Maremma. These are the territories of Montecucco DOC wine production, on the slopes of Monte Amiata.
These are the municipalities of: Arcidosso, Campagnatico, Castel del Piano, Castell’Azzara, Cinigiano, Civitella Paganico, Roccalbegna, Santa Fiora, Seggiano and Semproniano.
Along the road you have the opportunity to visit vineyards, wineries, farms, wineries loyal to local traditions.It is the ideal itinerary for lovers of good food and good wine because it allows you to discover the flavors and traditional cuisine of this part of Maremma.
Nearly every place reached by the Wine Route Montecucco offers visitors the opportunity to participate in tastings or guided tours. In this way you can walk in the vineyards, see the aging barrels up close and taste the wine in combination with local products: cold cuts, bread, oil, cheese.
Furthermore, the environmental context in which the road is developed is truly enchanting. It offers tourists more than one opportunity to go hiking, horse riding or mountain biking in nature. There are archaeological and thermal sites that date back to the Etruscan period.
The Montecucco Wine
The production of Montecucco wine is well rooted in the history of the territory. Already the Etruscans cultivated the vine on these hills and produced wine destined for parties and banquets or to offer to the gods.
Despite its long history, the denomination DOC was obtained only recently, in 1998. This makes the itinerary, the “youngest” among the wine roads of Maremma.
Montecucco wine is both red and white. The first one is based on Sangiovese grapes, while the second one uses Vermentino and Trebbiano Toscano grapes.
The red Montecucco is characterized by an intense color and an intense scent. The white Montecucco is more delicate and fresh, with a dry but pleasant taste.
Typical Products of the Montecucco Wine Route
Along the Montecucco Wine Route and the Flavors of Amiata you can also taste excellent quality extra virgin olive oil, certified DOP. This territory also offers excellent pecorino cheese, honey, truffles, mushrooms and saffron.
Characteristic of Monte Amiata is the chestnut with which traditional dishes are prepared both sweet and savory.
