MONTECRISTO ISLAND IN MAREMMA
Its surface is about 1,040 hectares and coastal development is 16 km. It is about 45 km and 63 km from dall'Argentario. Integral Nature Reserve with the ministerial decree on March 4, 1971, Montecristo is the territory of Portoferraio (LI). Population: two guards and two forest guards. Over at the legend from the pen of Alexandre Dumas, the island of Monte Cristo is the most rock, savage and bitter island of the Tuscan archipelago. The French novelist set at the end of the adventure of prisoners looking for a fabulous treasure once guarded and protected by the monks in the recesses of a cave. Scholars presume that the mythical treasure made by Dumas protagonist was actually formed by furnishings and fixtures sacred, and that to take the pirates were headed by Dragut about three centuries before the date favoleggiata by novelist. Its coasts are dirupate, with a single berthing in Cala Maestra (photo opposite), which is dominated by a deep and narrow wooded valley. The feature of the landscape is the large "sferoidi" and "mammelloni" scattered everywhere and often overlapping in a way that seem cyclopean reefs. They meet frequently unstable cliffs in equilibrium, which seems to have precipitated from time to time, large boulders called "tafoni" forged in figure bizarre wind erosion, and finally the "exhaust", ie smooth cylindrical wells, dug by the vortex motion water. The island is covered by a small mountain range that has three peaks: Mount Fortezza (645 m.), Cima del Colle Fund (621 m.), the Summit of Lecci (563 m.). The climate can be described as Mediterranean marine environment, with mild winter (average temperature of the coldest month exceeding 10 degrees) and rainy enough, the summer is moderately warm (average temperature of the hottest month of 24-25 degrees) more or less dry , but with high humidity.
