THE ISLAND OF PIANOSA IN MAREMMA
Pianosa is the fifth, by extension, of the seven islands of the Tuscan and is situated 13 km South-West (SW) of the island. It covers an area of 10.3 square km and a coastline of about 18 km. And 'inhabited only by a few people, some of the policemen's family of a prison guard and two or three inmates under a semi. It owes its name ( "Planasia" to the ancients) to the fact that they are almost all flat, and its higher elevation from sea fact is only 29 meters and the average is 15-20 m. Completely inserted in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, never before has it had been possible to visit this island so much forbidden as uncontaminated. Indeed Access is left to a permit issued by the Directorate of the park. During the visit requires a rigorous respect for the environment. Since 1996 the island in 1997 by the sea of Pianosa, for a development of a marine miles, are included in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park.
